A marriage license is a document issued to authorize a marriage. This license must be obtained before the ceremony takes place. If you're getting married in less than 5 days, you may apply for a Five-day Waiver.
You may apply for a marriage license at any of the Hennepin County Service Centers. The marriage license you purchase may be used anywhere in the State of Minnesota.
The law requires that your marriage ceremony be witnessed by two people who are sixteen (16) years old or older.

Do not sign this form until asked to do so by the Service Center Representative handling your application. If one of the contracting parties is unable to apply in person, his/her signature must be notarized.
- Both parties must be present to apply for the marriage license.
- If one of the parties cannot apply in person, a “Supplemental Application for Party Not Appearing” must be completed.
- Non-appearing party's signature must be notarized on the supplemental form.
- Non-appearing party's signature must be notarized on the marriage application.
- Notary service is available at all Hennepin County Service Center locations.
- You must wait 5 days before you can get married per MN law.
