You may register and vote in Minnesota if you:
- will be at least 18 years old on election day;
- are a citizen of the United States;
- will have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding election day;
- maintain residence at the address given on the registration form;
- are not under court-ordered guardianship in which the court order revokes my right to vote;
- have not been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote;
- have the right to vote because, if I have been convicted of a felony, my felony sentence has expired (been completed) or I have been discharged from my sentence, and
have read and understand this statement, that giving false information is a felony punishable by not more than 5 years imprisonment or a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.
- You may register to vote by mail or by picking up a voter registration application at one of the following locations:
- All Hennepin County Service Centers, see the Location area of this page for specific addresses.
- All county libraries, City of Minneapolis Libraries, city halls, and the Office of the Secretary of State

You may also register in person at one of the following:
- Hennepin County Service Centers, or
- City halls, or
- Office of the Secretary of State, or
- the Hennepin County Elections Office in the County Government Center, downtown Minneapolis
You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew your driver's license.

If you are currently registered to vote, you do not need to register again unless you have:
- moved to a different address
- moved to a new apartment, condo, etc.
- changed your name
- not voted at least once within the last four years
- New for 2008 - If you move and submit a permanent forwarding order to the U.S. Postal Service, your voter registration may be automatically updated to your new address for you. You will receive a postcard with your new address and new voting location. When you receive this card, please verify the residential address is correct. If the information is not correct, please follow the instructions on the post card.
Election Day Registration
If you are not able to pre-register, you can register on election day. To do so, you must provide election judges at your polling location with certain acceptable forms of identification to prove your eligibility, such as:
- A Minnesota Driver's License, Learner's Permit, Identification Card or a Tribal Identification Card with your current address (or the receipt for renewal or change of the license or I.D.)
- A "Notice of Late Registration" received from your city clerk if your voter registration card was received after the last day to pre-register.
- One of the following documents that contains your name and photo: Minnesota Driver's License, Identification Card or a Tribal Identification Card with a previous address, US passport or US military identification card AND Gas, Telephone, TV (Cable, Satellite), Water, Internet Services, Electric, Cell Phone, Solid Waste, Sewer Services or a Student Fee Statement with a due date within 30 days of the election that contains your name and current address.
- Rent Statement with itemized utilities.
- Another registered voter living in your precinct who will come to the polling location with you to vouch for your residency.
If you are a college student, you may also use your college student identification card with your name and photo if your college has provided a list of students to the county.
